I’ve been following @parisianfloors by German born Sebastian Erras on Instagram for some time and eagerly await each colourful new post featuring another glorious floor in Paris. Beautiful tiles and floorings go unnoticed by most, but Sebastian is spreading his message to “Look down!” His current tagline reads: ‘one guy – one city – one perspective’ which perfectly sums up his project. On visiting his Instagram account, you’ll discover all manner of spectacular tiling in ornate patterns, abstract and geometric shapes - both Art Deco and more recent - as well as Victorian flourishes.
Sebastian’s Parisian Floors project came about after a trip he took to Morocco, where his interest in the country's abundant mosaics and tiled floors grew and, on returning to Paris, he began to fully appreciate the treasures that lay beneath his feet. He photographs each floor from directly above, with his shoes included to provide perspective. He clearly boasts an impressive shoe collection to boot!
On Valentine’s Day, Sebastian sweetly included his own Valentine’s shoes alongside his own.
For those who appreciate textiles, colour, history and beauty, I strongly recommend making yourself a cuppa and taking the time to pour over this fabulous Instagram collection and discover more about the man behind the lens. A micro-documentary about the artist has also been made for the second series of Orange “Long Story Short” films.
