Mat Bingham's keen interest in photography began as a boy, when he borrowed his grandfather’s Pentax K1000 during a family holiday. Mat was immediately inspired to begin saving for his own camera and, at aged seventeen, became the proud owner of an Olympus OM20, allowing him to pursue his passion with abandon. Initially setting out to capture a wide variety of subjects around his home village, Mat soon found himself dedicating all his time to wildlife photography and the affinity he has with nature is evident in his breathtaking images.
On a landmark day in 1996, Mat both passed his driving test and celebrated the first publication of his work, a dewy spider's web in an amateur photography magazine. This was the first of many submissions to a variety of publications and competitions that have resulted in the recognition of a rare talent and allowed his wonderful work to be widely enjoyed.
Ten years later, Mat made the switch to digital, selling his darkroom and all of his original cameras - except one: the treasured Pentax of his grandfather's - and has since favoured a variety of SLRs by Canon.
Mat's first entry in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, regarded as the top wildlife photography competition in the world, won sixth prize in the 2007 Black and White category. And his subsequent entries, in 2008 and 2011, were both semi finalists in the same competition.
Since moving to the Midlands in 2013, Mat has embarked on a number of long term wildlife photography projects, his favourite subjects being two pairs of barn owls and a badger sett. His work is featured in a variety of publications, such as BBC Wildlife Magazine, Countryfile, The Countryman, Outdoor Photography, Amateur Photographer, Practical Photography and Photo Answers, and he is a regular contributor of entertaining and educational pieces to the Caught By The River website.
Mat has, most recently, returned from Iceland, where he captured some of the stunning images below. The Mountain Hare, Dipper and Barn Owl photographs were all taken in the UK.
